Dentistry 101: What Are X-Rays and Why Do You Need Them?

October 29, 2015

Many people ask if dental x-rays are really necessary and the answer is always YES. X-rays can show dental problems that may not be noticed during a visual exam like cavities or wisdom teeth. Without dental x-rays, it is very easy for dentists miss possible decay between teeth and fillings. While x-rays may seem like a nuisance at the time, they could end up saving you money and prevent dental issues in the future.
Depending on your age, you should typically have dental x-rays done every 1-3 years. Younger patients should get x-rays more frequently because they’re teeth are still growing. If you have had some teeth decay already, you should have x-rays done every year to prevent future issues. Bitewing x-rays are most commonly used for checkups. In one view, bitewing x-rays show how are lined up and touch each other. They also show signs of decay and gum disease if present.

If you switch dentists, it’s extremely important for your new dentist to have a copy of your dental x-rays. You can ask your old dentist to share your x-rays with your new dentist or you may decide it’s a good time to get new x-rays.
