dentist charleston toothbrush

Having great dental hygiene at all ages is important, after all, we all want to keep our teeth sparkly and clean throughout these wonderful years of our lives! Picking out the right toothbrush can be hard work; especially with all the choices available to us. Let us help you navigate the ins and outs of choosing the perfect toothbrush, and if you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office.

Babies

Dental care should not be *brushed* under the rug just because you can’t see your baby’s teeth yet. You want the best for your little one and that includes a healthy mouth. When your child is an infant, parents should use a Finger Tooth brush. This brush allows your babies mouth to be cleaned even before teeth have popped through the gums.

Toddlers and Children

When children start to have their teeth come in, it’s time to switch to a toothbrush with little soft bristles. Choose a toothbrush with a smaller handle so it fits in the child’s hands and is not intimidating. Allowing them to brush their own teeth teaches independence and long-lasting oral care habits. When they are young you want to let them practice doing their teeth themselves, however, until you have full confidence you should go back over their teeth to ensure they

Many people ask if dental x-rays are really necessary and the answer is always YES. X-rays can show dental problems that may not be noticed during a visual exam like cavities or wisdom teeth. Without dental x-rays, it is very easy for dentists miss possible decay between teeth and fillings. While x-rays may seem like a nuisance at the time, they could end up saving you money and prevent dental issues in the future.   Depending on your age, you should typically have dental x-rays done every 1-3 years. Younger patients should get x-rays more frequently because they’re teeth are still growing. If you have had some teeth decay already, you should have x-rays done every year to prevent future issues. Bitewing x-rays are most commonly used for checkups. In one view, bitewing x-rays show how are lined up and touch each other. They also show signs of decay and gum disease if present.   If you switch dentists, it’s extremely important for your new dentist to have a copy of your dental x-rays. You can ask your old dentist to share your x-rays with your new dentist or you may decide it’s a good time to get new x-rays.   Ready to have your pearly whites checked out and have new x-rays done? Give us a call at (843) 723-5346. We can’t wait to see you!

how coffee affects your teeth

We all know coffee tastes good, but are you aware of how it affects your teeth? Most everyone knows that coffee stains your teeth. That’s the most common way it hurts your teeth. But did you know that coffee is acidic, so it also causes enamel erosion? Teeth are very porous and will soak up anything that you eat or drink. Coffee also causes bad breath because it sticks to your tongue. However, a good thing that coffee can do is destroy plaque bacteria! The caffeine in coffee is high in polyphen which breaks up bacteria. However, if it stays on your teeth for too long it can erode your teeth. The catch also is that the polyphen will only help if you drink black coffee! Adding sugar and creamer harms your teeth even more. So what can you do if you drink coffee? One, cut down on the coffee you consume. Most dentists and doctors will tell you that more than 2 cups of coffee a day will cause serious damage to not only your teeth, but to your body as well. Two, drinking coffee with a straw greatly reduces the harmful effects of coffee. So try to always drink your cup of coffee with a straw.
